New South Transport was founded in 1978 by Diane Clemons—a determined and forward-thinking leader who carved out a place in the freight industry through hard work, integrity, and a clear vision for doing things the right way. Her promise was simple: when you give us a shipment, you shouldn’t have to think about it again.
Family-owned and operated from the start, New South Transport is a freight brokerage built on trust, reliability, and personal service. Diane brought her brothers, Sammy and Mark, into the business early on, and together they laid the foundation for a company known for dependable service and lasting relationships.

Meet Our Team
Sam Johnson
Sam Johnson graduated from University of Colorado with honors and a degree in finance. He started working in the Real Estate industry, learning Commercial leasing and property management at his father’s business in Connecticut. From there, he made a jump to Residential sales when he moved to Asheville, NC. With just a year of experience in residential real estate, he became the broker in charge of the brokerage office he worked for in Asheville - training, mentoring and supervising up to 14 agents.
As his residential real estate career was really starting to grow, he was presented with an opportunity from his Aunt-in-law and Father-in-law. They were looking for someone to buy and operate their freight brokerage which had been in business for over 40 years. Freeing up nights and weekends for more regular family time was more than enough to make the change.
The way Sam did business in the real estate world as a broker translated seamlessly to the freight brokerage world. Sam always did the right thing every time, no matter what. He nurtured strong relationships with clients, employees and his industry peers. No matter what problem came up, he knew there was a solution and that all parties could work together amicably to find it. These values have been applied directly to running a family owned freight and logistics company. He shows respect and kindness to everyone in the supply chain, from customer to driver while also conducting business efficiently and professionally. Accessibility and consistency is what makes the difference between a good broker and a great broker. Sam has made a commitment to be among the best in both.
Sam resides in Leicester, NC, just outside of Asheville with his wife Morgan and two sons. He enjoys surfing, playing volleyball, golfing and spending time at local breweries with his family and friends.

Meet Richard Threatt, freight broker and logistics specialist with New South Transport Service, Inc. The fast-paced, numbers driven global marketplace that is the freight industry can oftentimes feel as if it is a series of automated transactions, but Richard truly believes the most valuable asset in any supply chain is a trusted relationship.
Both Richard and NST's approach to freight brokering is built on four pillars: transparency, honesty, 24/7 accessibility, and creative problem solving. Whether navigating tight capacity or managing specialized loads, Richard serves as a tireless advocate for shippers and carriers alike, ensuring that the wheels of commerce keep turning smoothly. When you work with Richard, you aren't just getting a broker; you're getting a dedicated extension of your operations team.
Richard is based out of Asheville, NC where he spends his free time fly fishing the streams of WNC, paddleboarding with his wife Carly, or playing drums in various musical projects. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and loves to cheer on his beloved Gamecocks on Saturdays in the fall.
